We staff two Level I Trauma Centers: one at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), in New Brunswick, NJ, and one at University Hospital (UH), in Newark, NJ. These centers are two of only three Level I Trauma Centers in the state. The Level I Trauma Center at RWJUH treats people with serious injuries who arrive from all areas of the state. Physicians on staff also conduct research and educate other health care professionals on the most recent advances in trauma care.
Rutgers Health surgeons that specialize in acute care surgery also provide care for patients with life-threatening surgical conditions who are inpatients at RWJUH under evaluation in the hospital’s emergency department throughout their stay.
The Level I Trauma Center at UH is the only Level I Trauma Center serving the densely populated region of northern New Jersey. It has multiple missions of providing medical treatment, research, and education. It is also a leader in the advancement of trauma care in New Jersey and the nation.
Physicians who serve the General Surgery and Acute Care program are on the faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School or Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, both part of Rutgers University, one of the top research institutions in America. Our doctors are active in research and teach about all aspects of surgery. Each brings life-changing knowledge from the classroom to the exam room.
If you or a loved one needs surgical care, the Rutgers Health General and Acute Care Surgery program can provide expert, compassionate care.
