Appointment of Vice Chancellor for Graduate Medical Education/Enterprise Wide DIO

November 17, 2020

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Sherry C. Huang, M.D. as the inaugural Vice Chancellor for Graduate Medical Education and Enterprise Wide Designated Institutional Official (DIO).

Dr. Huang comes to RBHS from University of California San Diego (UCSD) where she served as Associate Dean and DIO for Graduate Medical Education (GME). She graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an S.B. in Chemistry and received her M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. She completed her general pediatrics residency and fellowship training at UCSD in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition.

As the inaugural holder of this role, Dr. Huang will be responsible for advancing our vision, achieving the best GME educational, strategic and financial structure, and positioning Rutgers Health GME training programs for excellence. Dr. Huang will chair the Rutgers Health GME Committee (GMEC) and will be integrally involved in all critical aspects of the integration of the Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health GME programs. She will help design and craft the processes and structures necessary to coordinate a state-wide training environment with over 1,600 residents and fellows, including all the previous Rutgers housestaff and RWJBarnabas Health housestaff. She will also monitor and track the accreditation activities of the Sponsoring Institution and will ensure compliance with Rutgers, state, federal, and accrediting agency regulations.

Dr. Huang is board certified in pediatric gastroenterology. Her research has focused on translational research in pediatric colon cancer genetics and early risk colon cancer, and she has received extramural grant support for these efforts from the NIH. She has a long history championing graduate medical education and served in the past as the UCSD Pediatric Residency Program Director. She was an attending physician in pediatric gastroenterology at Rady Children’s Hospital and in 2013 received the Rady Children’s Hospital Award for Excellence in Teaching. Since October 2019, she has served as an invited committee member on the California Future Health Workforce Commission on the topic of GME expansion. Dr. Huang also serves as an invited ACGME member for the Clinical Learning Environment Committee.

We would like to thank Michael Kelly, M.D., the Interim Designated Institutional Official, for his service and for his guidance in achieving accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for Rutgers Health to be a Sponsoring Institution.

We would also like to thank Anil Nanda, M.D. who led the search for this new position, along with the members of the search committee, listed below, for this very successful search.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Huang on this appointment and welcoming her to Rutgers and RWJBarnabas Health.

Sincerely,
