Dr. Angela Starkweather Appointed as Dean of the Rutgers School of Nursing

August 2, 2024

Dear Rutgers Health Community,

I am pleased to announce that Angela Starkweather, PhD, ACNP-BC, FAANP, FAAN, has accepted the position of Dean of the Rutgers School of Nursing. Currently, Dr. Starkweather serves as the Chamings Professor and Assistant Dean for Research Development at the University of Florida College of Nursing. Dr. Starkweather will join Rutgers later this month.

Dr. Starkweather brings an impressive academic, research, and service background to her new role. She earned her BSN from Seattle Pacific University, followed by a PhD in Biobehavioral Nursing from Loyola University Chicago, where she also obtained her MSN in Trauma/Critical Care in the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. Throughout her career, Dr. Starkweather has taught courses across nursing and interprofessional curricula and has developed expertise in curriculum design, quality assessment, and review. She is an avid educator with teaching responsibilities focused on research development at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels.

As a nurse scientist and clinician, Dr. Starkweather’s research focuses on identifying the factors that contribute to the transition of acute to chronic pain and associated symptoms. She also implements multilevel interventions at individual, system, and societal levels to improve the quality of life and health outcomes for people affected by chronic health conditions.

Dr. Starkweather will join the Rutgers School of Nursing on Aug. 19. Please join me in welcoming her into our community. Read more about Dr. Starkweather and her illustrious career here.

I also would like to express my deep gratitude to Dean Linda Flynn for her years of service and I wish her the best in retirement. Under her leadership, the Rutgers School of Nursing has flourished as New Jersey's most comprehensive nursing school and one of the best in the nation.

Additionally, I would like to thank the members of the Dean Search Committee for their active participation in this extensive national search process. Thank you for your time and commitment to building excellence here at Rutgers Health.
