Suspension of Events and Celebrations

Dear RBHS Community Members:

Earlier this week, in response to guidance from government agencies, President Barchi announced the difficult decision to suspend all in-person instruction and events, with the exception of clinical instruction, for the remainder of the spring semester. As we navigate these unprecedented times, it is our responsibility to take actions such as these to protect the health of our community.

The last months of the spring semester are typically filled with much excitement on our campuses, and the vibrancy and joy experienced at events and celebrations like Match Day and Rutgers Day will be greatly missed this year. Of particular disappointment is the suspension of commencement ceremonies, which are the symbolic culmination of our students’ years of study, hard work, and dedication to their fields. It is also a moment of tremendous pride for our faculty and staff who have supported and fostered these accomplishments in pursuit of creating and sharing new knowledge that betters our world. The university is considering alternative options for commencement and we will let you know these plans as soon as possible.

We are witnessing a disruptive and historic time that understandably provokes uncertainty and accompanying anxiety. We are very thankful for the dedication of our faculty and staff—especially our front-line health care providers—who continue to tackle essential duties despite significant unforeseen challenges and obstacles. We remain committed to ensuring our students can complete their academic and clinical requirements, that our research continues to advance understanding innovation, and that essential functions of the university operate as needed. As we work to adjust our processes in support of these goals, please know that information regarding many logistical details will be shared as soon as it is available.

I have abiding faith that our university—with its more than 250 years of history during some of the world’s most turbulent times—will persevere in support of our mission and values. While our lives have been upended this semester, we stand together with all of you in confidence that brighter days are ahead.
