Lucio Volino, a clinical professor and director of assessment at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy who has trained hundreds of students to provide immunizations and disease testing, was elected as a fellow of the American Pharmacists Association by its Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management.

The academy selects 10 fellows each year who demonstrate achievements in professional practice and outstanding service through activities in the association and other organizations.

“When reflecting on being selected as a fellow, I see it as a commitment moving forward rather than a recognition of previous work,” said Volino. “It serves as a reminder to leverage my experiences and support faculty and students to be more involved in service and leadership endeavors.”

Volino, who has been a faculty member at the Rutgers school of pharmacy for 18 years, advocates for integrating pharmacy into practice-based education programs and initiatives. He has instructed numerous pharmacists, student pharmacists and technicians in administering immunizations. Through his leadership, hundreds of students and residents have been able to provide point-of-care testing and promote disease state awareness and prevention in the community.

Additionally, he has coordinated and supported the execution of more than 800 community outreach education and health screening initiatives at various locations, including senior centers, assisted living facilities, training centers, health fairs and schools.

Volino’s clinical practice role with the Barnabas Health Retail Pharmacy – RWJBarnabas Health involves developing, implementing and managing clinical, patient-centered self-care, preventive care, transitions of care and medication management services across six affiliated pharmacies.

“I am fortunate to have the opportunity as a pharmacist and teacher to do what I love every day,” Volino said. “This would not have been possible without the guidance and support of my mentors, colleagues, students, family and friends; for that, I am eternally grateful.”

Volino earned his doctor of pharmacy degree from the Albany College of Pharmacy and completed a two-year post-doctoral industry fellowship at Novartis Pharmaceuticals through the Rutgers Institute for Pharmaceutical Industry Fellowship in clinical research and regulatory affairs. He currently holds the position of national president of the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society.

Being recognized as a fellow is more about investing in future generations and ensuring others’ successes while continuing to advance education, healthcare, and the profession of pharmacy,” he said.
