Integration Update: April 2024
April 23, 2024
Universities occupy a unique place in our world. They are places of research and discovery, driving innovation. They are economic engines and major employers for their communities. They are catalysts promoting diversity and social justice. But above all, they are institutions that exist to educate and train students.
The integration of New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) is all about the students. Combining the two schools will reap many benefits for our student body, creating a stronger institution with enhanced educational and research opportunities. As a single entity, Rutgers School of Medicine (RSOM) can offer expanded academic programs, improved infrastructure, and enriched learning environments—all a win-win for students.
As a key element of the integration, our leadership team is committed to open and clear communication with our students. They are among our most important stakeholders, so we want to ensure their voices are heard and their needs addressed. By listening and learning together we will work to develop communication strategies that are informed by our diverse community.
We have launched several initiatives to communicate effectively with our students. Earlier this year, focus groups were conducted with representatives of both schools. Participants discussed the details of the integration, potential opportunities, communication efforts, and ways to further engage students. These ideas and suggestions are helping to shape the integration process.
We have also established a Student Experience Task Force to address many important issues, including curriculum innovations, clinical and research opportunities, student support services, and more. The task force will provide valuable input to the Integration Executive Committee, co-chaired by NJMS Dean Robert L. Johnson, MD, FAAP, and RWJMS Dean Amy P. Murtha, MD. Regular updates will be shared with our student body.
Town hall meetings are another avenue for our student community to discuss their ideas, insights, and concerns. RWJMS recently held a town hall meeting, based on the feedback received from the student focus groups. A town hall meeting for NJMS students is in the works as well.
This month, the deans of both schools are hosting “Student Chats with the Deans”: exclusive student-focused virtual discussions with Deans Johnson and Murtha. These 10-minute sessions are private chats where students can share their thoughts and concerns directly with the leadership of the two schools. If you haven’t signed up for a session, we invite you to do so here: Student Chats with the Deans Sign Up. We value your input and want to hear from you.
We also invite you to participate in a brief survey here: Student Survey for Medical School Integration Communication. The survey is designed to gather feedback for strengthening communication throughout the integration planning process. Your input will help us tailor our communication approach to better suit your needs.
Our heartfelt thanks to our students, and our entire community, for sharing your thoughts and ideas. As this work proceeds, and regarding all phases of the integration, we will continue to solicit your input and keep you informed every step of the way. Watch for news and updates in this newsletter, on the Rutgers website, and here: Framework for Integration: Rutgers School of Medicine Planning Structure.
Sincerely,
